Hi Maggie,

I have been kicking myself because I'm moving out of Austin the day before you are supposed to be in town for The Raven Boys graphic novel tour. I have been a fan of this series for almost a decade (!) and I have a question I've been dying to ask you... since I sadly won't be able to ask you in person, I'll try to put it here:

Which "obscure Irish music instrument(s)" did Ronan take lessons in?

As a fellow obscure instrument musician myself (I play the Renaissance lute) I just really want to know! I know Matthew played the bouzouki, but what about Ronan?

Ok that's it, thank you so much for everything you do!! So excited to keep following your work and reading your beautiful writing, and I'm also so grateful for your ability to turn the internet into less of a horrible cesspool!!

How exciting! I've never been able to visit any of your in-person events so it's great to see that you're planning more of an online presence on Substack, which I've loved as a reader & writer for many years.

I've yet to pick up The Listeners (it's firmly stuck in my substantial tbr list...) but in the meantime, I'd love to read more of your thoughts on how you've matured as a writer, how your process has changed, the differences you've found as a writer between YA & adult fiction, the state of the publishing industry, new opportunities for writers etc. I devoured your recorded writing seminar & would also love to see more on the writing craft if you're willing to teach in this format as well.

how do we pay for subscription, or is it not set up yet?

It JUST got set up, but I think it's live—I believe if you're already subscribed to the free account, you have to go to your list of subscriptions on Substack and select the upgrade there (thanks for asking!)

I think I found how to change the subscription type, but it looks like there are three tiers to choose from. Is there a place to read about the differences between each subscription level?

Is there any chance of any of this work being available anywhere else? Would love to be able to access it (and support you!) But substack are a very unpleasant company who throw a lot of money into platforming the far right, and that's not a thing I can comfortably put money into.

Glad to hear the pop up Stiefvater tumblr wasnt someone pretending to be you! And YES to old school blogging. I miss those days…

May I just say, re:

> crazy to think of folks commenting on Greywaren Art long before the Raven Cycle ever existed <

Please don’t tease us like that without sharing some of these old images!

Your tumblr was my absolute favorite thing in the world; in my teens, I’d check it regularly to see if you’d written another witty, insightful piece about how to be or how character spreadsheets weren’t helpful for you. I learned both a lot about writing from you but also about what it takes to be the sort of person I wanted to be. I’m looking forward to longer form Stiefvater blog posts!! Glad you’re here!

This is so cool. I have always wanted your guidance as I tiptoe around maybe somehow possibly writing a novel or...something like one. And I am in a season of change right now, but maybe...this can be where I dip my toes in and discover a little more about what I'd like to create, too.

Hi Maggie, did you see the movie Sinners that came out earlier this year? I was reminded by a comment above on Irish music. What did you think of it? I loved it, especially the music/dance scenes.

I’m glad you’re back on Substack! I’ve pulled away from almost all social media so it’s good to still be able to keep up with a favorite author ❤️

Yesss, love this idea! As a brand new mom and a debut author, reading and taking notes on my phone has been the only way to stay connected to my writerly self in between nursing and naps and losing my mind, haha. Oh how I miss paper :-( My brain is mush these days, but thoughtful posts like yours keep me sane! Maybe a future post about creating as both a mom AND artist?
