Midweek Ephemera: The Scorpio Races

I thought it might be entertaining to share work-in-progress ephemera midweek: Y/N?

In any case, while I was digging in my files looking for something else (I did not find it; the story of life), I rediscovered one of the working documents from my writing of THE SCORPIO RACES.

November 27, 2010, according to its timestamp! It’s a doc of the sort I have a lot of for each project—me working out structure in a format outside of the manuscript. I can convince myself of anything in prose. I’m always reconfiguring tools that might let me look at the skeleton with no meat.

In this one, you can see me working out pacing and logistics. The first list is what I had in the manuscript at the time. The second version was me testing a new shape before doing it in longform.

I’m happy to chatter more about the process during a paid weekend post, but for now, without further context, the doc (with the warning, of course, that there are spoilers for THE SCORPIO RACES):

Current timeline:

DAY 1: Puck and Finn race; horses emerge; Puck says she’s racing; Gabe says he’s leaving.

DAY 2: Puck to beach; decides to ride Dove; Sean tries the piebald, Mutt pees in Sean’s boots, Puck to butcher’s to register, Sean fights with Mutt outside butcher

DAY 3: Sean meets George Holly; Puck on beach; Sean saves her “get off beach”; Malvern comes to Puck to evict her. Mutt lets Fundamental die.

DAY 4: Puck finds out riding early works. Sean/ Malvern teahouse about Fundamental; pick horse for Mutt. Festival that evening: Puck confronts Gabe, Sean has existential moment with mare-goddess, finds out Mutt’s bought piebald, fights with Mutt about it, parade of riders.

DAY 5: Sean says, sell me Corr or I quit. Malvern says, so long, sucker. You have a week to get your stuff out.
